SUMMARY:AI\, Infrastructures and Sustainability
STATUS:CONFIRMED
TRANSP:OPAQUE
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20260901
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20260901
DESCRIPTION:Why are we rapidly expanding AI infrastructures? What is the so
cial and environmental impact of rapidly expanding AI infrastructures? Who
benefits from the AI–hype and who bears the costs? How do metaphors use
d to describe technology restrict our understanding of these questions? Jo
in us for the book launch ‘AI\, Infrastructures and Sustainability’\,
an event that explores the material\, political\, and environmental realit
ies behind today’s AI systems. The book explores critical issues\, such
as the environmental degradation\, economicconcentration\, and social just
ice of AI infrastructure\, areas that have often been overlooked in discus
sion on sustainability. The environmental impacts of data centres\, the fa
ctories of AI\, have been extensively documented. Despite this\, the Europ
ean Commission aims to triple the number of data centres operating within
the EU\, relying primarily on efficiency–based measures to control envir
onmental harm. This “sustainability through optimization” approach fla
wed and does not account for AI’s supply chain of violence. So why are w
e deepening conflicts across the globe to build places where machines thri
ve? During this event\, editors Anne Mollen and Fieke Jansen\, will introd
uce the ideas and motivations behind ‘AI\, Infrastructure\, and sustaina
bility’\, reflecting on what the material nature\, political economy\, a
nd governance of AI reveal about its broader societal consequences. Contri
buting authors Anne Mollen\, Patrick Brodie\, and Gerwin van Schie will fu
rther explore the power structures\, environmental impact\, and knowledge
implications of AI infrastructures. Speakers Anne Mollen is a postdoctoral
researcher at the Institute of Communication Studies at the University of
Münster. She conducts research on automation\, algorithms and “Artific
ial Intelligence“\, specifically on the sustainability of AI\, automatio
n and public opinion formation\, and the use of automated decision–makin
g systems in the workplace. Patrick Brodie is an Assistant Professor and A
d Astra Fellow in the School of Information and Communication Studies at U
niversity College Dublin. His research focuses on the political ecology of
digital infrastructures. He is the co–author of From the Bog to the Clo
ud: Dependency and Eco–Modernity in Ireland (Bristol UP\, 2025). Gerwin
van Schie works as an Assistant Professor in the Media and Culture Departm
ent at Utrecht University\, where he investigates how plant\, soil\, flowe
r\, and tree metaphors are operationalised in various forms of algorithmic
culture\, ranging from government data systems to academic discourse on p
latform infrastructures. Fieke Jansen is Assistant Professor at the Media
Studies department of the University of Amsterdam. She is the co-PI of the
critical infrastructure lab and her research focusses on how the material
impact of expanding infrastructures is shaping the management\, distribut
ion\, and depletion of natural resources. https://spui25.nl/programma/ai-i

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday evening\, September 3rd\, for the first try
out of Green Clouds\, followed by a lecture on Sci-fi\, fantasy\, and Mar
xism. Try out: Green Clouds\, Remember To Forget Me Can we still be forgot
ten? In this immersive lecture\, Mamamess takes you on a journey exploring
the tension between fragile human memory and the permanence of digital da
ta storage. She asks: What happens to us when machines no longer forget—
even after we are gone? Can forgetting become an act of resistance against
today’s surveillance economy\, where data about us is continuously coll
ected\, stored\, and analysed? Set against the backdrops of a hospital wai
ting room\, data centres\, and outer space\, this collective experience in
vites us to contemplate the meaning of forgetting and to reflect on the co
llective right to be forgotten. Sci-fi\, Fantasy\, and Marxism Following t
he immersive lecture\, Jelle Klaas explores what science fiction and fanta
sy can teach us about capitalism\, class\, feminism\, and racism. Through
images and film clips\, he examines how imagined worlds shape our politica
l imagination and everyday lives\, and how popular culture helps us imagin

DESCRIPTION:Over the past years we’ve seen an increase in censorship\, sh
adow-banning\, and blocking of accounts across large social media platform
s like Instagram. Many artists\, designers\, and cultural and social organ
isations\, rely on these platforms to connect with their communities and s
hare their stories and their work. But what if we can build our own archiv
es and websites\, and create our own networks to share our stories\, as a
way to keep authorship and intention in our own hands? \n\n\nThis hybird w
orkshop\, led by Kexin Hong and Yiyao Wei\, opens through an introduction
to Echoes from Afar\, an open-source\, living\, online archive that explor
es how digital infrastructures can challenge conventional forms of represe
ntation while opening up space for Asian diasporic communities to narrate
their own stories. In its approach to storytelling\, the project seeks to
safeguard the integrity of personal narratives\, to cultivate plurality an
d openness in how stories surface and circulate\, and to lay the groundwor
k for a living archive that makes space for richer\, more textured forms o
f visibility in the place of flattened or reductive images. \n\n\nIn the f
irst part of the workshop\, participants will learn about Echoes from Afar
and the basics of self-uploading and managing artworks on the platform\,
so that participants can begin contributing their own work if they would l
ike to. In the second part of the workshop\, we will learn about the open-
source workflow behind the archive\, showing how participants can build th
eir own websites or archives using free and accessible tools that require
no prior coding experience. Throughout this hands-on process\, the worksho
p will draw on AI technologies\, such as Claude\, as one of the working to
ols that can assist website building\, while still remaining grounded in a
practice of ethical care. \n\n\nNo prior coding experience is necessary a
nd you do not need to be of Asian heritage to join this workshop. \n\n\nTh

DESCRIPTION:Townhall: From doom scroll to hope core \nWe’ve all heard the
diagnosis. Algorithms are rotting our brains\, shortening our attention s
pans\, and turning us into passive consumers of an endless feed. But what
does the evidence actually say? And more importantly: what do we want to d
o about it? \nIn the last ten years\, the chronological timeline gave way
to the algorithmic feed\, and with it\, the way we think\, communicate\, a
nd tell stories shifted with it. We consume more content than ever\, but d
o we recognise what’s authentic anymore? And is there anything worth sav
ing in a life mediated by social media\, ChatGPT\, and an app for everythi
ng? \nThese are the questions we’re bringing to Brainwash Festival. As p
art of the “technology = god” programme strand\, we’re hosting a Tow
nhall that asks: when does convenience become obedience\, and who’s actu
ally in control? \nAbout Brainwash Festival\nBrainwash Festival is the pla
ce to be for thought-provoking ideas and visions of the future. At Brainwa
sh Festival\, philosophers\, scientists\, artists and writers come togethe
r to explore the big questions of our time and challenge the status quo. W
e bring together established figures and new voices. We celebrate thinking
\, doubt and your curiosity. \nBrainwash Festival 2026 takes up the theme
‘the shape of us’\, through which it explores\, from different perspec
tives\, what it means to live together. \nMore information about the progr
 amme TBA. \n📅 Date: 31 October\n📍 Tolhuistuin\n🎟️ Tickets: via
Brainwash \n♿ Accessibility notes\nFind more info on the Tolhuistuin web
 site.
